The Heritage of Riversdale

Is a blend of ancient origins and colonial establishment. Long before it was a town, the region was home to modern humans as far back as 130,000 years ago, with significant archaeological finds at the nearby Blombos Cave.
Founding: The town was established in 1838 on the farm Doornkraal after the Dutch Reformed Church sought to create a new parish for the local farming community.

Naming: It was named after Harry Rivers, the Civil Commissioner of Swellendam at the time. While “Riversville” was initially suggested, Rivers himself preferred the name Riversdale.

Key Landmarks:

The Old Jail (Die Ou Tronk): Built in 1838 by the Barry family, it served as a trading post before becoming a high-security prison and police station in 1860.
Julius Gordon African Centre: Housed in the 1880 Versfeld House, it holds the second-largest collection of Thomas Bowler paintings in South Africa.
C.J. Langenhoven: The “father of Afrikaans” and author of the original national anthem completed his schooling in Riversdale, living at what is now Langenhoven Huis.
