A Journey Through History

of Calitzdorp begins with the indigenous Khoisan people, who left their mark in ancient rock paintings found in the surrounding valleys.

1821: The land, then known as Buffelsvlei (Buffalo Valley), was granted to brothers J.J. and M.C. Calitz

1850s: A community formed around a newly donated church and school, saving locals the long trek to Oudtshoorn for Nagmaal (communion).

The Ostrich Era: In 1912, the town’s prosperity during the ostrich feather boom led to the construction of the magnificent Dutch Reformed Church. Built in a neo-Byzantine style with a Marseilles roof, it remains a national monument today, housing an organ large even by European standards

Resilience & Growth: Despite surviving the collapse of the ostrich industry and the 1918 flu epidemic, the town found new life with the arrival of the railway in 1924 and its rise as a premier fruit and wine-producing hub.

Nature & Adventure: Soak in the mineral-rich Calitzdorp Spa or explore the dramatic Redstone Hills via tractor tour.
