Portuguese Explorers:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese explorers regularly visited the bay. Evidence of these early maritime encounters remains today, including artifacts from the\u00a0<\/span>S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alo shipwreck<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>of 1630.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Dutch Legacy:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>In 1779, Baron Joachim van Plettenberg, Governor of the Cape, renamed the town after himself. The Dutch East India Company established a foothold here, building the\u00a0<\/span>Old Timber Shed<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in 1786 to store wood harvested from the lush surrounding forests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historic Landmarks:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Many of Plett’s oldest structures still stand, such as the Old Rectory,\u00a0 which dates back to 1777 and once served as accommodation for company employees.

Kranshoek<\/strong> remains the headquarters of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Griqua National Conference of South Africa<\/strong>. The community is known for:
