The town’s history is deeply rooted in the Dutch Reformed Church and the unique natural resources of the area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Foundation (1900):<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Originally known as\u00a0<\/span>Fontein Vlei<\/strong>, the town was laid out in 1900 on the farm\u00a0<\/span>Grootfontein<\/em>. It was renamed after\u00a0<\/span>Johannes Rudolph Albertyn<\/strong>, the first Dutch Reformed minister to serve the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Aloe Tradition:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>For generations, local “tappers” have harvested the bitter sap of the Aloe Ferox. This traditional practice became a formal industry with the establishment of large-scale processing factories in the mid-1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mining & Thatch:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>In 1925, the mining of\u00a0<\/span>red and yellow ochre<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(natural earth pigments) began, making Albertinia the principal source of ochre in South Africa. <\/p>\n

The town also has a long history of exporting\u00a0<\/span>Thamnochortus insignis<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(thatch) for commercial roofing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cultural Landmark:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The Albertina Dutch Reformed Church<\/span><\/span>, built with a distinct architectural style, remains one of the most photographed landmarks on the Garden Route and serves as a symbol of the town’s heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n
