<\/span>George <\/span>is a central hub and the largest city in the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Garden Route<\/strong>, South Africa, serving as a gateway to the region\u2019s iconic mountains, forests, and beaches. Known as South Africa’s Golfing capital<\/strong><\/span>, it offers world-class courses and a mild climate that makes it a year-round destination.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indigenous Roots:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Long before colonial settlement, the area was home to the\u00a0<\/span>Outeniqua<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(Khoe-Khoe) people, whose name means\u00a0<\/span>“people laden with honey”<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Timber Outpost (1777):<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The Dutch East India Company established a “buitepos” (outpost) here to harvest the vast indigenous forests for ship-building and furniture timber.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proclamation (1811):<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>George was the first town founded under\u00a0<\/span>British rule<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in South Africa, officially named after\u00a0<\/span>King George III<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>on St George\u2019s Day, 23 April 1811.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transportation Boom:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The town’s growth was accelerated by engineering feats like the\u00a0<\/span>Montagu Pass (1847)<\/strong>, which finally linked the coastal plateau to the interior, and the later arrival of the scenic railway in 1913.<\/span><\/p>\n

In George<\/strong>, So<\/span><\/span>uth Africa, the history of rail and botanical heritage is deeply intertwined through the city\u2019s early infrastructure. The Garden Route Botanical Garden perserves the original 1812 water furrows and dams that once supplied the town while the nearby Outeniqua Transport Museum<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0serves as the gateway to the region\u2019s historic railway mountain passes.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>The railway over the Outeniqua Mountains is a feat of early 20th-century engineering, with construction beginning in 1908 and completing in 1913.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Golf<\/strong>: Play at world-renowned courses such as Fancourt<\/span><\/span>(ranked 14th in Golf World\u2019s Top 100 Resorts 2025), Oubaai Golf Club and George Golf Club.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Water Sports<\/strong>: Nearby Wilderness offers canoeing on the Touw River and kloofing in the Kaaimans Gorge.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Historical Infrastructure<\/strong>: The garden contains the\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Van Kervel Dam<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(enlarged in 1875) and furrows dating back to 1812, which are the earliest examples of urban water management in George.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conservation<\/strong>: Officially established as a botanical garden in 1998, it focuses on preserving the unique Southern Cape flora, featuring a Medicinal Mound, succulent rockery, and the Southern Cape Herbarium.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Recreation<\/strong>: It serves as a hub for nature lovers, offering guided history walks, hiking trails into the mountains, and a popular annual wildflower show in October.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outeniqua Transport Museum is l<\/span>ocated in a 1932 locomotive shed, it houses 13 steam locomotives, vintage carriages (including part of the 1947 Royal Train), and a private classic car collection.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The Power Van<\/strong>: A motorized rail inspection trolley that departs from the museum, taking passengers up the mountain through seven tunnels and four historic passes, offering panoramic views of the forest and waterfalls.<\/span><\/div>\n
