\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This coastal gem on South Africa\u2019s Garden Route has evolved from a rugged industrial outpost into the “Jewel of the Garden Route”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Founder (1804):<\/strong>
<\/span><\/span><\/span>George Rex, rumoured to be an illegitimate son of King George III, is considered the town\u2019s founder<\/span>. He established a port and timber business that began exporting hardwoods globally.<\/span><\/p>\n

Timber Industry:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>For over a century, Knysna was a logging town. The Thesen family<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Norwegian settlers arriving in 1869) and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>George Parkes\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>were instrumental in industrialising the timber and shipping trade<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Gold Rush (1880s):<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>South Africa\u2019s first modern-era gold rush occurred at Millwood<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in the Knysna forest. While the boom was short-lived, it brought a surge of settlers and infrastructure to the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maritime Danger:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The famous Knysna Heads<\/span>\u2014two towering sandstone cliffs\u2014were famously proclaimed by the British Royal Navy as the “most dangerous harbour entrance in the world”<\/span><\/p>\n
