Known as the\u00a0<\/span>“Whale Nursery of South Africa,”<\/strong>\u00a0Witsand offers the highest concentration of Southern Right Whales in a single bay between June and November. It is a place of rare phenomena, from the eerie “roaring sands” (Brulsand) that hum when disturbed to the historic “Kraaltjie” harbour where time seems to stand still. Whether you are kite-surfing the river mouth or watching a newborn whale calf breach for the first time, Witsand is the ultimate escape for those who seek the extraordinary in the quietest of places<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

The\u00a0<\/strong>Woolshed<\/b>\u00a0located at the entrance of town will leave you breathless with the amazing gifts, art and crafts on offer \u2013 it is here, that you\u2019ll also find the\u00a0Koffie \u2018n Kletz Coffee Shop<\/strong>, a popular stop for travellers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Spasie Restaurant<\/strong>\u00a0is arguably one of the most unique offerings in Witsand with its delicious\u00a0croissants, steak, and burgers.\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>Spasie Rum Distillery<\/b>\u00a0is licensed for wine and artisanal spirits sales and offers a unique rum with tasting sessions and is located within the Breede River Lodge complex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Witsand \/ Malgas<\/b>\u00a0Pontoon<\/strong>\u00a0connecting Witsand with Malgas has been motorised and is operational between 06h00 and 18h00 daily. Please note that when the Pontoon is serviced, it does not operate. It is advised that travellers consult operations (Overberg District Municipality) on 028 425 1157 in advance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Sijnn Wines Estate<\/b><\/span>\u00a0is located a mere 40-kilometers from Witsand and can be reached via the Pontoon. Sijnn produces wine that is indicative of its distinctive terroir and geographical location. The two main wines produced at Sijnn Wines is Sijnn White Blend and the Sijnn Red Blend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Witsand Putt-Putt Park<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>offers a variety of family fun activities, which includes a putt-putt course, bungy bounce, quad bikes, paintball target practice, and school holiday programmes. The\u00a0<\/span>Witsand Bowling Club<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>is located close to the Putt-Putt Park and offers well-maintained facilities with a Club House. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Moodie Legacy:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>In 1831, the British government granted the farm\u00a0<\/span>Westfield<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>Captain Benjamin Moodie<\/strong>. His family eventually allowed fishermen and holidaymakers to build the first cottages, leading to the town\u2019s official proclamation in 1909.<\/span><\/p>\n

Port Beaufort:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Nearby Port Beaufort was once a flourishing trading hub in the mid-1800s, established by the\u00a0<\/span>Barry family<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>to ship wool and produce between the Overberg and Cape Town.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historic Landmarks:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>You can still visit the\u00a0<\/span>Barry Memorial Church<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(1859) and the\u00a0<\/span>Old Woolshed<\/strong>, which now serves as a local arts and crafts shop.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bay and estuary provide a paradise for\u00a0<\/span>Snorkeling<\/strong>\u00a0 and\u00a0Stand-Up Paddle Boarding<\/strong>\u00a0on flat water and wide open spaces \u2013 the Breede River is a popular location in summer season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Hopkins Land Parkrun<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>is a weekly free and fun 5-kilometer run with scenic views of the surroundings fauna and flora. This is a flat gravel route and in winter, the spectacular bright yellow Canola-fields is a pure delight for the censes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This coastal town connects with the inland villages of Slangrivier and Vermaaklikheid through\u00a0gravel roads<\/strong>\u00a0which are ideal for\u00a0cycling<\/strong>\u00a0or exploring by means of a\u00a04\u00d74 vehicle<\/strong>. The Witsand gravel roads connecting with Slangriver and the Overberg towns Malgas and Buffeljagsrivier is often the route of mountain biking challenges.
