The Blombos Museum of Archaeology,<\/span><\/span>located in the historic Palinggat Homesteadd<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in Stilbaai, showcases world-renowned discoveries from the nearby Blombos Cave. <\/span><\/p>\n

While the cave itself is a closed research site, the museum houses original artifacts and replicas that date back\u00a0<\/span>70,000 to 100,000 years<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The World’s Oldest Art:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>A replica of a small piece of red ochre inscribed with a\u00a0<\/span>cross-hatched geometric pattern<\/strong>, dated to 75,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

The World’s Oldest Necklace:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Replicas of tiny\u00a0<\/span>Nassarius kraussianus (sea snail) shell beads<\/strong>. These shells were deliberately pierced and strung together as personal adornment roughly 75,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

100,000-Year-Old Paint Workshop:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Evidence of an\u00a0<\/span>ochre-processing kit<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>found in abalone shells, showing early humans were mixed-media “chemists” who produced and stored liquid pigment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still Bay Points:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Fine, leaf-shaped\u00a0<\/span>bifacial stone spear points<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>made from silcrete. The museum displays examples showing early use of “pressure flaking” and heat treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rock Art Gallery:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>A collection featuring life-sized tracings and photographs of\u00a0<\/span>San rock art<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>found in the Langeberg mountains and Hessequa region.<\/span><\/p>\n
