of Calitzdorp begins with the indigenous Khoisan people, who left their mark in ancient rock paintings found in the surrounding valleys.<\/p>\n

1821:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The land, then known as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Buffelsvlei<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>(Buffalo Valley), was granted to brothers J.J. and M.C. Calitz<\/span><\/p>\n

1850s:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>A community formed around a newly donated church and school, saving locals the long trek to Oudtshoorn for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Nagmaal<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>(communion).<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ostrich Era:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>In 1912, the town\u2019s prosperity during the ostrich feather boom led to the construction of the magnificent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Dutch Reformed Church<\/strong>. Built in a neo-Byzantine style with a Marseilles roof, it remains a national monument today, housing an organ large even by European standards<\/span><\/p>\n

Resilience & Growth:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Despite surviving the collapse of the ostrich industry and the 1918 flu epidemic, the town found new life with the arrival of the railway in 1924 and its rise as a premier fruit and wine-producing hub.
